El imponente Illimani orgullo de todo paceño y admirado por todos los visitantes, lejanamente avistado con 3 picos nevados, pero en realizad posee cuatro picos que forman el hermoso macizo que lo posiciona como el nevado más alto de la Cordillera Real. Cada uno de sus picos llevan nombres en el siguiente orden siendo divisado desde la ciudad de La Paz; a la derecha se encuentra el Pico del Indio o Sur conocido por los aimaras como Achocopaya; el siguiente se llama Pico La Paz o Central, llamado también Cóndor o Águila Blanca, situado en el centro del nevado; al lado izquierdo se encuentra el Pico Kuhm o Norte; por último está el Pico París, que no es visible desde la ciudad ya que se halla oculto hacia el sudeste de la montaña y los comunarios lo llaman Laika Kollo que quiere decir Cerro Brujo. Entre todos estos el pico más alto es pico sur con 6.460 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
Esta montaña se encuentra más o menos sesenta kilómetros de distancia de la ciudad, tiene más de 8 km de longitud y tres mil kilómetros cuadrados, es el escenario perfecto para muchos escaladores aunque son pocas las agencias de viajes y turismo que brindan el servicio seguro y garantizado.
Muchos nos preguntamos sobre el origen del nombre y aunque existen varias interpretaciones, entre ellas coinciden que el origen es prehispánico. Los pobladores aimaras que habitaban la ciudad lo llamaban Illemana, que significa “por donde nace el sol”; mientras otros lo denominaban Jilir Mamani que quiere decir “ el hijo mayor”.
El Illimani es considerado el Achachila mayor (espíritu protector) de la ciudad de La Paz, las comunidades cercanas a las faldas del nevado como Cohoni y Khapi realizan constantemente rituales de ofrendas y agradecen el agua del deshielo que riega los cultivos del sector y alimenta a las diferentes lagunas del lugar.
THE SNOWY ILLIMANI
